1. The John Deere 40 and 50 Series

2. Identification and Serial Range
Record tractor serial, engine number, transmission type, front axle and hydraulic equipment. John Deere running changes can affect parts and procedures within one model.
3. Diesel Engine
Check cold starting, blow-by, oil pressure, exhaust smoke, coolant condition and fuel leaks. Turbocharged versions also require boost-system inspection.
4. Fuel System
Mechanical injection systems require clean fuel, correct timing and sound injectors. Later variants may include additional electrical controls.
5. Cooling and Wet-Liner Care
Where wet liners are used, correct coolant chemistry is especially important. Inspect radiator, fan, thermostat, water pump and signs of coolant contamination.

11. Charge Pump and Main Pump Relationship
A transmission/charge pump may supply the front high-pressure pump. Poor charge flow can make the main pump noisy or weak without the main pump itself being the root cause.
12. Hydraulic Chatter
Possible causes include low oil, restricted filter, poor charge supply, air leaks or internal leakage. Check supply before replacing the front pump.
13. Linkage and Draft Control
Check raise/lower operation, draft response, holding ability and internal leakage. Weak linkage hot can point to internal loss or supply problems.
14. Remote Valves
Leaking selective control valves can waste flow and create heat. Check couplers, spool leakage and correct external valve compatibility.
15. Steering
Weak steering may indicate steering-unit leakage, cylinder leakage or a wider hydraulic supply problem.
16. 4WD Front Axles
Inspect front axle oil, hubs, prop shaft, steering joints and 4WD engagement. Use approved front/rear tyre combinations.
17. Brakes
Wet-disc brakes share oil on many tractors. Contamination or incorrect oil can affect brake behaviour and hydraulic/transmission systems.
