1. Why the MF35 and MF65 Remain Popular

Both tractors are simple, compact and highly repairable. They remain common on small farms, estates, classic-tractor collections and restoration projects.

2. Identification Before Ordering Parts

Record the tractor model, serial number, engine type and transmission/PTO arrangement. Do not rely on bonnet decals alone because many tractors have been repainted or rebuilt.

3. Engine Families

MF35 and MF65 tractors were produced with different engine options depending on model and market. Diesel engines are especially common, but petrol and other variants exist.

Confirm the exact engine before ordering pistons, liners, bearings, injectors or gaskets.

4. Cold Starting and Fuel System

Hard starting should be approached in order:

  • Battery and cranking speed
  • Cold-start system
  • Fuel supply and filters
  • Air in the system
  • Compression
  • Injection timing and injector condition

5. Engine Smoke

  • White smoke: poor cold combustion, timing, injector or compression issues.

6. Cooling System

Inspect radiator, fan belt, thermostat, water pump, hoses and coolant. Old radiators can be internally restricted even if the fins look clean.

7. Clutch and Dual-Stage Arrangements

Depending on specification, the clutch may control both tractor drive and PTO through a two-stage arrangement.

Common faults include slipping, dragging, stuck clutch plates after storage and incorrect pedal adjustment.

8. Gearbox and Transmission

Check for gear noise, jumping out of gear, selector wear, bearing rumble and water contamination. Confirm whether the tractor has standard gearing or additional ratio options before repair.

9. Multi-Power Where Fitted

Some Massey Ferguson tractors were fitted with Multi-Power. It is not a conventional mechanical high/low box and should be diagnosed with the correct hydraulic and transmission procedure.

Safety

On Multi-Power tractors, use the correct range for downhill operation. Do not assume engine braking is available in every position.

10. PTO System

Identify whether the tractor uses transmission-driven, live or independent-style PTO arrangements. PTO complaints can result from clutch adjustment, linkage faults, internal clutch wear or selector problems.

11. Ferguson Hydraulic Linkage

The three-point linkage is central to both tractors. Check position control, draft response, lift speed, holding ability and lowering control.

12. Linkage Will Not Raise

Check oil level, pump drive, filter/strainer where fitted, control linkage, relief valve, pump condition and internal leakage before dismantling.

13. Linkage Drifts Down

Possible causes include lift-cylinder leakage, piston/ring wear, control-valve leakage or check-valve leakage.

14. Steering and Front Axle

Inspect steering box, drag links, track rods, kingpins, wheel bearings and centre pivot. Loader tractors often show increased front-axle wear.

Check pedal travel, balance between sides, linkage freedom and oil contamination. Brake design and adjustment vary by tractor and production range.

16. Electrical System

Many tractors have been converted from original charging equipment. Identify actual voltage, polarity, alternator/dynamo and starter wiring before diagnosis.
