Choosing the Correct Hydraulic Oil – Tractor & Machinery Guide

Using the correct hydraulic oil is essential for pump life, valve operation, wet brakes, transmission performance and cold-weather operation. The wrong oil can cause noise, slow hydraulics, brake chatter, poor lubrication, overheating and premature wear.

Do not choose oil by colour or thickness alone

Two oils can look almost identical but have very different additive packages and friction characteristics. Always identify the system and the manufacturer’s required specification before topping up or changing oil.

First Question: What System Uses the Oil?

Before choosing an oil, identify whether the machine has:

  • A separate hydraulic reservoir
  • A combined transmission and hydraulic oil system
  • A rear axle / transmission / hydraulic common sump
  • Wet brakes or wet clutches sharing the same oil
  • A hydrostatic transmission
  • Separate final-drive or axle oils

This matters because a tractor with one common sump usually needs a different oil from an excavator with a dedicated hydraulic tank.

UTTO – Universal Tractor Transmission Oil

UTTO is commonly used in tractors where the transmission, rear axle, hydraulics, wet brakes and sometimes PTO clutches share one oil.

A UTTO is designed to provide

  • Hydraulic performance
  • Transmission lubrication
  • Gear protection
  • Wet-brake friction control
  • Wet-clutch compatibility where specified

UTTO is often the correct type for later tractors with combined transmission/hydraulic systems, but the exact manufacturer specification still matters.

STOU – Super Tractor Oil Universal

STOU is a multifunction tractor oil intended, where approved, for use in engines, transmissions, hydraulics and some wet-brake systems.

It should not be assumed that every tractor suitable for UTTO is automatically suitable for STOU, or vice versa. Modern machines may require a more specialised transmission/hydraulic oil.

Dedicated Hydraulic Oils

Construction machines, excavators, loaders, forklifts and industrial hydraulic systems often use a dedicated hydraulic oil rather than a tractor transmission oil.

These are commonly identified by viscosity grades such as:

  • ISO VG 32
  • ISO VG 46
  • ISO VG 68

The viscosity grade is only part of the specification. Anti-wear, oxidation, anti-foam and corrosion properties also matter.

Understanding ISO Viscosity Grades

ISO VG numbers describe the oil’s viscosity at a standard temperature. In simple terms:

ISO VG 32 Lighter oil, often used in colder conditions or systems designed for lower viscosity.
ISO VG 46 Very common general-purpose hydraulic viscosity.

Viscosity is not the whole answer

An ISO VG 46 industrial hydraulic oil is not automatically suitable for a tractor transmission with wet brakes and clutches.

Wet Brakes and Wet Clutches

Tractors with oil-immersed brakes or clutches need oil with the correct friction characteristics.

Wrong oil can cause

  • Brake chatter or squeal
  • Grabby brakes
  • Poor clutch engagement
  • Clutch slip
  • Accelerated friction-material wear

This is one of the main reasons generic hydraulic oil should not be poured into a combined tractor transmission/hydraulic system unless the manufacturer specifically allows it.

Older Tractors

Older tractors may use very different oil arrangements from modern machines.

Using an oil that merely says “tractor hydraulic” on the container may not be enough.

  • Biodegradable-oil requirement where applicable

Biodegradable Hydraulic Oils

Do not mix biodegradable and conventional mineral hydraulic oil unless the manufacturer and oil supplier confirm compatibility.

Can Different Hydraulic Oils Be Mixed?

Mixing should generally be avoided unless compatibility is known.

Cold-Weather Operation

Oil that is too thick when cold can cause:

  • Delayed transmission engagement

Machines operating in very low temperatures may require a lower-viscosity or high-viscosity-index hydraulic fluid.

Hot-Weather Operation

Oil that becomes too thin at high temperature can cause:

Do not simply fit a heavier oil to hide pump wear. Use the specified grade first and diagnose the hydraulic fault correctly.
