Transmission and hydraulic oil service is critical on tractors and machinery that share one oil between the gearbox, rear axle, hydraulics, wet brakes and PTO clutch systems. Correct oil, clean filters and clean suction strainers help protect pumps, bearings, gears, control valves and friction materials.
Lower loaders, three-point linkage and hydraulic implements fully before draining or checking oil. Relieve hydraulic pressure where required and never work beneath raised equipment supported only by hydraulics.
1. Confirm the System Layout
Before draining anything, identify whether the machine has:
- One common transmission/hydraulic sump
- Separate transmission and hydraulic reservoirs
- Separate rear axle compartments
- Separate final drives
- Hydrostatic transmission oil
- Dedicated steering or brake circuits
Many tractors have several drain plugs but only one combined oil system.

9. Check Filter Seals
