Brakes, Steering & Safety Checks During Restoration

A restored tractor or machine should not be judged ready simply because the engine runs and the paint looks good. Brakes, steering, tyres, wheel fixings, controls and safety structures need to be checked before the machine is driven, worked or taken onto the road.

Safety first

Carry out initial brake and steering tests at very low speed in a clear, level area. Do not road-test a machine until braking, steering and wheel security have been confirmed.

1. Start With the Brakes

Old tractors and machinery may have:

  • Dry drum brakes
  • Dry disc brakes
  • Wet multi-disc brakes
  • Hydraulic wheel brakes
  • Mechanical rod or cable-operated brakes

Identify the system before dismantling or adjusting anything.

2. Check Brake Pedal Movement

Check both pedals for:

  • Free movement
  • Correct free play
  • Pedal return
  • Seized shafts
  • Worn bushes
  • Unequal travel

Old pedal pivots often become stiff from corrosion and lack of lubrication.

3. Check Split Brake Pedals

Agricultural tractors often have separate left and right brake pedals.

Check

  • Both sides operate evenly
  • Pedal latch works correctly
  • Pedals can be locked together for road use
  • Neither side binds

Unequal braking can be dangerous at road speed.

4. Mechanical Brake Linkages

Inspect:

  • Rods
  • Clevis pins
  • Return springs
  • Cross-shafts
  • Adjusters
  • Cables where fitted

Wear in several linkage points can create excessive pedal travel even when the brake linings are still serviceable.

5. Dry Drum and Disc Brakes

After years standing, check for:

  • Oil contamination
  • Rust
  • Seized adjusters
  • Cracked linings
  • Broken return springs
  • Glazed friction material

If oil has contaminated the brakes, repair the leaking seal before fitting new linings.

6. Wet Brakes

Wet brakes operate in transmission or axle oil.

Check for

  • Brake chatter
  • Poor braking force
  • Contaminated oil
  • Wrong transmission oil
  • Friction material debris

Correct oil specification is critical for wet-brake performance.

7. Hydraulic Brake Systems

Inspect:

  • Master cylinders

Old brake fluid absorbs moisture and can corrode internal components.

  • Independent brake mechanism where fitted

9. Steering Wheel Free Play

Excessive steering play may come from several areas.

  • Steering box
  • Drop arm
  • Drag link

  • Front axle pivot
  • Hydraulic steering cylinder ends

Check each joint individually instead of assuming the steering box is at fault.

10. Front Axle Centre Pivot

On many 2WD tractors the front axle oscillates around a centre pin.

Check for

  • Vertical movement
  • Fore-and-aft movement
  • Dry or seized pivot
  • Worn bushes
  • Damaged thrust washers

Severe pivot wear can alter steering geometry and allow the axle to contact surrounding parts.

11. Kingpins and Wheel Bearings

Jack and support the front axle safely, then check:

  • Kingpin play
  • Wheel-bearing play
  • Roughness while rotating
  • Hub oil or grease leakage

12. Track Rods and Ball Joints

Inspect:

  • Boots
  • Ball joint movement
  • Locknuts
  • Bent rods
  • Thread condition

Loose steering joints should be repaired before road use.

13. Power Steering

Check hydraulic steering systems for:

  • Oil leaks
  • Steering-cylinder wear

14. Hydrostatic / Orbitrol Steering

Later tractors and construction machines may use an orbital steering valve.

15. Four-Wheel-Drive Front Axles

Inspect:

  • Hub play
  • Kingpin bearings

Oil around front hubs may indicate seal or bearing problems.

16. Check Wheel Nuts and Studs

Before driving:

  • Torque wheel nuts correctly
  • Inspect studs for damage
  • Check adjustable wheel centres
  • Check rim bolts and clamps

Loose wheel fixings can damage the rim and hub very quickly.

17. Inspect Tyres

Old tyres may look usable but still be unsafe.

Look for

  • Deep sidewall cracking
  • Bulges
  • Exposed cords
  • Separation
  • Damaged valves
  • Incorrect pressure

18. Check the Clutch Before Road Testing

Confirm the clutch:

  • Releases fully
  • Does not slip
  • Has correct free play
  • Does not grab unpredictably

A stuck clutch can make a machine difficult or impossible to stop safely.

19. Throttle and Engine Stop Controls

Make sure:

  • Throttle moves freely
  • Throttle returns correctly where designed
  • Engine stop cable works
  • Fuel shut-off solenoid works

You should know exactly how to stop the engine before the first drive.

20. Gear Selector and Neutral Position

Check:

  • All gears select correctly
  • Neutral is definite
  • Gear lever is not excessively loose
  • Range selectors engage fully

21. Starter Safety Interlocks

Where originally fitted, check:

  • Neutral-start switch
  • Clutch-start switch
  • PTO-start interlock
  • Seat or operator-presence systems on later machines

Do not bypass safety interlocks as a permanent solution.

22. PTO Guards

Check that PTO guarding is present and serviceable.

Inspect:

  • Master shield
  • PTO shaft guards
  • Implement guards
  • Guard bearings/chains

23. ROPS and Cab Structure

Inspect the roll-over protective structure or cab frame for:

  • Severe corrosion
  • Cracks
  • Previous welding
  • Loose mounting bolts
  • Missing structural parts

Do not drill, cut, heat or modify a certified roll-over protective structure without approved information. Unauthorised modifications can weaken it.

24. Seat and Seat Belt

Where fitted, check:

  • Seat mountings
  • Seat slide lock
  • Suspension
  • Seat belt webbing
  • Belt anchorages

25. Lights and Signals

If the machine will use public roads, confirm:

  • Headlights
  • Tail lights
  • Brake lights
  • Indicators
  • Hazard lights
  • Beacon if required

26. Mirrors and Visibility

Check:

  • Mirrors secure
  • Glass condition
  • Wipers working
  • Washer system where fitted
  • Cab windows clear

27. First Brake Test

Test at walking speed first.

  1. Choose a clear, level area.
  2. Drive very slowly.
  3. Apply both brakes gently.
  4. Check the machine stops straight.
  5. Test each side individually if appropriate.
  6. Test parking brake separately.

28. First Steering Test

At very low speed check:

  • Steering response
  • No sudden tight spots

After the first short run:
