Bringing a Tractor or Machine Back Into Use After Long Storage

A tractor, excavator or other machine that has stood unused for years should not simply be given a fresh battery and started. Time, moisture, stale fuel, corrosion and dried seals can create faults that are not obvious until serious damage occurs.

Safety first

Before attempting to start or move a long-stored machine, check that the brakes, steering, tyres, controls and surrounding area are safe. Do not work beneath raised equipment supported only by hydraulics.

1. Do Not Try to Start It Immediately

Before touching the starter, first establish:

  • How long the machine has been standing
  • Whether it was stored indoors or outside
  • Whether the engine was known to run when parked
