Hydraulic systems on old tractors and machinery often suffer from contaminated oil, hardened seals, rusty cylinder rods, cracked hoses and blocked strainers. A careful hydraulic restoration should focus on cleanliness, oil condition, hose safety and correct diagnosis before expensive pumps or valves are replaced.

Safety first

Hydraulic systems can store dangerous pressure even with the engine stopped. Lower all equipment, relieve pressure and never work beneath a raised loader, linkage or boom supported only by hydraulics.

1. Identify the Hydraulic System

Before draining oil or disconnecting anything, establish whether the machine has:

  • Separate hydraulic reservoir
